C.S.I. Burma Forensic Dept
Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Brian Blade
The Forensic Music Tour 2004 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Barbican, London, UK, July 2, 2004.
Undoubtedly in the news is Nobel Peace Prize winner and prisoner of conscience Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest by the military in Burma ever since her political party won elections in 1990.
In 1996, when saxophonist Wayne Shorter's wife passed away, he released an album with Herbie Hancock, 1+1, where he included his composition, the moving Aung San Suu Kyi. A piano and sax exploration of determination. Then in 2004, Shorter together with Hancock, Dave Holland and Brian Blade, decided to tour calling it The Forensic Music Tour, meaning to delve deeper into their compositions, cutting away and finding the soul of the music.
This show was originally treed at MilesTrees.org just before the site folded [it has made a reappearance but seems less active]. This is how the compilers explained their 11-CD coverage of the tour: "The music on HSHB04 is sometimes densely complex, occasionally bluesy, often inscrutable. And always wonderful to listen to. Play these in the background driving to market, or on the computer at work. Or dissolve into them with headphones on your best home rig. We think you'll be rewarded with each and every listen." The Barbican gig was show No. 3.
Every night on the tour, Aung San Suu Kyi was played as a quartet with support from Holland's bass and Blade's drums.
An excellent FM broadcast.
